740 Loader Cylinder Replacement

Anybody ever have to replace cylinders for a backhoe?

I have a 4500 TLB, now both bucket cylinders are leaking (one was before), as it's been sitting outside for some time. Shop won't even give a ballpark estimate, for rebuilding until I bring them in, but were hinting in the $300 range and up just for seals.

Just wondering if it's possible to replace them, for a reasonable cost.

I'm still considering DIY, but the slots on one of the gland nuts is pretty tore up, so It might be a hassle getting it loose, even with the right tool.

Really just want to get things going before winter.

I rebuilt mine some years back, no big deal. Just one word of advise; don't have your hand under the cylinder and above the arm when you push out the pin. Don't ask how I know this.

Is that a hydraulics shop or a tractor dealer? I would expect that from a New Holland dealer, but a local hydraulics shop shouldn't be quoting that much, especially sight unseen. If that was a hydraulics shop, see if there are any other shops nearby.

If you decide to rebuild seal kits are available at Ebay or Baum Hydraulics (probably other places as well). Cost per bucket cylinder seems to be in the $40 - $50 range.

About rite for price, at 100.00 an hour. If have trouble glands out it could take over hour plus may have to machine new ones. I do this for a company and we get in some dozzeys sometimes. Make new glands,pistons and rods and barrels for many. Have done rods as small as 1/2 in to 6 in rods plus barrels up to 8 in bore.

They?re online, too. Have been happy with their products & services. It?s not just surplus, have lots of new goods, esp. hydraulics.

Everything that surpluscenter.com sells is "new", as in never been used, but most of it is excess stock from some company or another that no longer needed them, like a tractor manufacturer stocked 10,000 of a particular cylinder while they were producing a model of tractor that used that cylinder, and then when they ended production on that tractor model they had 1200 of the left, their bean counters decided that they should only keep 1000 of them in stock as parts for customers to be able to buy replacements, so they sell the extra 200 to surpluscenter at a discount to not waste their shelf space, which costs money if they have other inventory that needs to go there, otherwise they have to expand their warehouse space. So surpluscenter passes on the discount to their customers.
