Ford 861 Powermaster

The pto shaft on my 861 has some weird gouges in it about 6 inches in, the only thing that is remotely near it at this point is the ring gear which has no marks on it. Does anyone know what could have caused this?

If the ring gear is close to the pto output shaft,someone must have turned the tractor wrong side out.

The only way I can make sense of your question is if you have the PTO shaft out of the tractor and the gouges are 6 inches back from the front of the shaft. In that case the only thing I can think of would be a vise or pipe wrench while trying to free something stuck. I cannot imagine anything normally inside the tractor causing that.
