is there any other way to tell the year model of a ford 861 powermaster diesel besides the serial number it has been ate up from battery leaking acid also how many 861 power master diesels were made

The engine block casting number can get you to within a couple of years

310--- = 58-59
B9NN----- = 59-60
C0NN----- = 60-62 for the 801 series

Others may know how to get you closer than that.

Each part has a casting date code, that tells the day the part was cast. Engine is front lower left side. The first number should be the year it was cast followed by a letter signifying the month and also a number that states the day of the month. I think thats correct. Theyre are small variances from that pattern. If the tractor is original it will give you a ballpark figure.

Another place that tells is a little plate soldered to the top of the radiator. There is no way of knowing how many were built. All models coming off the line were included in the same sequence of stamped numbers. There were a number of "base" models. including 601, 701, 801, 901 with a number of various sub-models. My own estimation, from what you see out there now, would be that 801s probably made up 60% of the total and that diesels made up perhaps 25% of the 801s.

Each part has a casting date code, that tells the day the part was cast, cast into each end of the number are marks that look like screws. Engine is front lower left side. Rearend is lower left side near the trumpet, I think its upside down. Tranny is near the brake pedals and footboard. The first number should be the year it was cast followed by a letter signifying the month and also a number that states the day of the month. I think that's correct. They're are small variances from that pattern. If the tractor is original it will give you a ballpark figure. This all depends on if parts have been swapped over the years. Write down the earliest date and the latest date of the castings and make a guess as to when it was all put together. There's also dates on the steering box and hydraulic top cover.

I have a 4000 that I couldnt read much of anything on it. I needle scaled all the paint off and sprayed it with red oxide primer. I got all of the model numbers and serial numbers. At certain times of the day in different lighting conditions they were more visible. Of course you have to have enough left to read. Some of them got eaten by battery acid very bad. I think you can find the numbers with a strong magnet and magniflux. There are warning labels on the magniflux can .
