Trying to help my neighbor out her husband passed away she?s been using His 9n to clean up a little bit. Yesterday couldn?t get the tractor to move or the PTO to work. There?s a little knob on the dash with a cable that goes into the transmission/bell housing. once I pushed the knob in everything worked fine what does that cable do? what is it for?

Sounds like the shift knob for a Sherman step-up cable operated
transmission. Others a lever operated. Most of the cables are
froze up after years of not being used, so she's lucky.

As Royse said it's for a sherman shep up or step down trans. It's likely it wasn't pull out enough and you were in the neutral detent. Pushing the knob in engages the sherman in the step up (speeds the tractor up) or step down (slows the tractor down) depending on which sherman you have. To engage your standard gears the knob should be pulled out. The clutch pedal should be depressed when engaging or disengaging the sherman. If when pulled out it will not go passed the neutral detent Then lubricate the cable and gently work it in or out. Keep the cable well lubricated to ensure it works properly. here is a video on the cable sherman
