Added another basket case Ford to my collection

Guy didn't know what model it was but it had at one time a 4 cylinder Ford diesel in it that developed a loud knock and when torn down discovered a crank broken into 3 pieces and a cam into two. The mains look okay so I'm guessing something happened in the timing department and not every part got the memo.

It has a Hummer like gear reduction on each axle. It has some huge, brand new rear tires also, 16.9-28 with some nice pie weights too. And auxillary hydraulics on the back.

He said the engine was a 172 model which I assume meant a 172 cubic inch model.

Just sorting through the pieces right now and cleaning off all the gunk.

The previous owner also said it was an auto transmission but was changed out to a 3 speed. I had never heard of a 3 speed tranny so I'm assuming that because the "4" was covered in gunk and he couldn't see it, thought it was a 3 speed.

The gear reduction intrigues me the most.

Sounds like you have an early rowcrop tractor. Like a 901 or early 4000 if it truly has the 172 engine. Look on
the flat area behind the starter above the two bolt holes and see what is stamped there. Should be model # and
serial # there if the battery acid hasn't eaten it away. Just my 2 cents worth Greg NE
 

Yes, like greg said, the "gear reduction" boxes are commonly called drop boxes or final drives. They were on the 900, 700, 901, 701, and 4000. The "automatic" part most likely means that it came originally with the Select-O-Speed transmission which was a power shift but frequently called automatic. Since the SOS was changed out you no longer have the original serial number but being a 172 with SOS it would have been a 971 or 981 0r early 4000.

It does sound like a 901 or 4000 row crop model.

Does it have the egg crate grill and round medallion like the 801/901 series, or does it have the eyebrow above the grill with

It has the round medallion like my Jubilee and the 851D. I'm not sure what an egg crate style looks like but this one is wavy perforated steel.

It also has a funky power steering unit.

The trans says came out of 841 diesel. If has rectangular hole below steering wheel it was a S-O-S unless went to trouble to change tin. Started life as 9x1 with wide front axle.
 

The "funky power steering" is standard for a four cylinder Ford row crop. The blue round side cover with the PTO lever is another indicator that it was originally an SOS.

Yes it does have the tall rectangular hole below the column.

Now to take apart the engine to see what all is damaged. Thanks for the help guys.

Two of the pistons were already removed as well as the three piece crank. Had a difficult time removing the last two. Soaked for a day with ATF and Acetone mixture but still had to use a 2 pound sledge and a block of oak to drive them out. All the bottom ring landings are cracked or broken. Something violent stopped this motor. I don't believe the previous owners story of it starting knocking so I shut it off.

I need to take all four rods to a competent machine shop and have them checked out.
