641 Starter Constant

So about a month ago when I went to start my 641 it would just click once and then nothing. I put a charger on the battery and battery wouldn't hold. Purchased new battery. Charged and went to start ... again just a click. I assumed it was the starter solenoid and put a new one in. Now when I turn the key to the on position the starter continues to turn without me pressing the starter button near the shifter. The tractor starts but I never hit the starter button... It's like a modern car.... any ideas? it use to be when I turned the key nothing would happen until I hit the starter button... It's a 6v system FYI. Any help appreciated!!

Did you get the CORRECT starter solenoid, or one for a newer automotive application?

They can look exactly identical outside, but the connections INSIDE can be completely different.

Do you have the make and model number of the solenoid you installed?

You've got the wrong solenoid! I'm assuming your tractor has been converted to 12 volts???

There are two different 12 volt solenoids. The automotive one is closed by supplying 12 v power to the small S terminal. This is apparently what you have.

The one you need for your pre-65 Ford tractor is closed by grounding the small S terminal.

This has been discussed much here. Do a search. you might even find NAPA or other part numbers for the correct solenoid.

It's a 6v system. I received from external link Part: ABC3919. Link below.

that number appears to be correct for your application. As a test, remove the small wire connection going to safety start switch button and see if symptoms change.

I removed the top pole wire and turned the key and it fired up, removed the wire from the bottom pole and turned the key nothing (there are two wires going to one). Removed the wire from the starter button (near the shifter) and turned the key and it fired up.

I just dont get why all of a sudden this would happen and wouldn't have been going on the whole time I have had tractor with the old solenoid... unless Steiner messed up which starter they sent...

Sorry, Mr. mcg1238, I'm sure that you description paints a very clear picture in your mind, but to me it is as clear as mud. What terminal is "top"?, what terminal is "bottom"?, which terminal has two wires?, where does the other end of each of the three wires attach????? Sketch it.?
