631 Recent Unexplained Governor Problem

Just bought this tractor. When I got the tractor I could run it at low engine RPM fine, both idling and driving. Ran it for about 5 minutes to get it where it needed to be to load it on the truck to take home. Half way to the loading point going up a hill it started slowing down (engine RPM's fell) and I pulled the throttle arm all the way but it ended up stalling. Got it going and used a lower gear and it still had a hard time pulling any kind of RPM's like it should, till it got on flat ground. Once on flat ground it started to race and the RPM's went higher than they should. I shut it off. Loaded it on the trailer got it home. Now anytime I start it, it immediately goes to the engine racing. What might have happened here?

(quoted from post at 08:56:12 10/05/18) Zero ideas here?

Start by verifying the governor-to carb linkage works freely and that the throttle butterfly inside the throttle bore is intact and the screws holding it to the throttle shaft haven't loosened, broken, or fallen out.

If those things check out, (engine "OFF") verify governor linkage adjustment by disconnecting it, then noting that the carburetor lever hits it's "wide open throttle" stop JUST BEFORE the governor arm reaches it's "end of travel" in that direction.

Adjust if needed.

If non of that helps, the governor has internal issues and you're going to have to tear into it and see what's worn out, broken, or fallen apart.

Bob, I was looking too deep. Did not suspect nor look to see that the linkage from the governor came off the carb while I was driving it. I need to keep it simple stupid a little more often! Thanks for the help.

That's GOOD NEWS!
