My 47 8n stops running when the amp meter moves to zero
The generator is not charging
Has not been a problem beforewhen I tap the meter it moves left and tractor will run for a few seconds then meter moves to zero and tractor stops
Any ideas?

ounds like you suspect the ammeter? If so, short the ammeter terminals together with a wire and see if tractor runs. Simple, quick, easy. If a loop ammeter, the ammeter has no bearing on the passing of current.

Welcome to the forum. However, there is a forum dedicated to the N series tractors, Ford 9N, 2N & 8N. That one might yield some better answers to your N questions.

Your wiring setup is all mucked up. It helps us to know if it is wired OEM 6V/POS GND or has a 12V switch over job been performed? Electronic Ignition? You say a 47/48 8N so it should have the front mounted distributor using a 3-wire/3-Brushgenertir and a Voltage Regulator if OEM 6V. When the ammeter moves to the NEG side of ZERO, usually obvious when the light switch is engaged, it indicates the wiring to it (ammeter) is backwards. If screw terminal type gauge, simply reverse the wires. If INDUCTION/LOOP GAUGE, feed wire from opposite direction. However, that isn't your problem. Tapping a gauge in order to have the tractor run doesn't sound very logical does it to you? You should disconnect the battery and go through the entire wiring. Here are diagrams of what the original 8N wiring should be. Color codes on diagrams show the original -your wiring harness may differ so only use as a reference.
