My tractor has 861 and a serial number on the frame but has 801 powermaster on the side decal. I have seen some that says 861 powermaster on the decal. Would someone explain the difference and why is mine different?

801 is the series.
The models are 841, 851, 861, 871, 881. Hope I didn't miss any.
The center digit indicated the transmission and options.

Yes, the 6x1's were similarly numbered with a smaller engine.
The below information compliments of John Smith.

As other have said 801 is the model series and is what the original decals have on them.
An example is the original 801 decal on my 881

Aftermarket decals are available with the entire model number on them which makes it easier to identify these different models but the original decals only identified the series.

Thanks for the info. but which decal would be correct on the
side of my tractor, 801 or 861? Also, does anyone know the
horsepower of the 172ci gas engine?

Thanks for the info, I missed seeing your comments earlier. I
think the picture caused a delay in me receiving it. My internet
service is slow.

Which correct decal might depend on what year your tractor is. They used model numbers on the powermaster/workmaster decal up until somewhere around 1960 then they went with the series numbers on the decal so that's why you will see both. So many tractors have been freshened up with new paint and decals have been used to owners preference so it's not uncommon to see either one used. When I repainted my 1960 631 I choose the model number for my decal. Is my decal correct? I don't really care cause I like it. The HP in your 861 would be about 42HP.

It looks like a the air cleaner might have been an "option" on the 631 !! And where are the 4" wheel spacers to make PARW "legal" on a 601?

Ha HA. The paint wasn't quite dry on the air cleaner when photo was taken. Spacers are hanging in the barn. Rails were bowed from rust. Don't think these PA rims will be spinning out or in anytime soon.
