starter burned out

Could someone help. I Have a ford 601 which I changed the wire harness, it seemed to run good then the starter burned up. Replaced the starter and it ran good a couple times. Yesterday while pulling an aeirator I heard a loud sort of wine rumble noise and smelled something burning I thought it might me a belt. After a while saw lots of smoke coming out of the starter. Turned the tractor off, saw burnt marks on the starter. Now when I turn the key to the on position it tries slowly to start. Ideas, did I wire it wrong or bad key switch. Any ideas will be apprieciated. Thanks Kevin

Can't comment on your wiring because I don't know how you wired it. Ring gear in good shape? Did you get the wrong solenoid on it? There are two different 4 pole 12 volt solenoids. The 601 needs one in which switched power is supplied to the I terminal and momentary ground is applied to the S terminal.

The other would need momentary power to the S terminal and would supply momentary power to the coil through the I terminal. This one is an automotive application and later tractor application.

If your 601 is still 6 volt OEM you'll need to make sure you've got a 6 volt solenoid of former type.

Sound like the starter once you have tried ort start it keeps on spinning which will in fact burn a starter out. So either the solenoid is bad or you wired it wrong or the starter button has shorted out or some other such problem

Ring gear is in good shape, converted tractor to a 12 volts years ago, I got the solenoid from yesterday's tractor. thanks for your suggestions.

Still got the big thumb push button switch?

If yes. Unhook it from the solenoid, see it starter turns with key on. If yes, solenoid may be wrong, as well as possible other problems.

Post back some wiring details.

unhooked the starter button from the solenoid, turn the key on it did not start.

Remove wire at starter button itself. Check continuity from terminal on starter button to ground. Check continuity from the button to solenoid wire itself to ground. There should be none on either one of these without the starter button depressed.

Ok, key on, no crank with thumb switch wire pulled. Turn off key, plug thumb switch back in, get on tractor, turn key on, if she tries to crank, then you know that wire is shorted to ground, or the thumb switch is bad

Test by pulling wire off at thumb switch. Turn key on, if no crank, then wire is not grounded.

Do all this testing from the seat so you don't get run over...be safe.

I did what you said, ended up changing the push button starter. It started up properly and I ran it for a while with no problem. Thanks for all the help, kevin
