4100 Engine Question

I have later model 4100 (Not sure of year but it has a single cartridge-type fuel filter and alternator. The Operator's Manual I got is evidently for an earlier version and does not show or reference an apparent gear case on the right side of the engine just to the rear of the radiator area. Mine has a cap with a rubber-compression type sealer.

I assume this should have oil in it. But what is the fill level? I can not see any oil in mine, but oil film on the gears.

Thanks much!!!

That is the timing gear cover, and the plug is the engine oil fill. You wont see any oil there beyond a film. Earlier ones had the fill on top of the valve cover. You level is the dipstick on the left side of the engine. 7 quarts with a filter change.

Gear case oil fill and alternators were introduced in 1-75 with the -600 series, your 4100 was built after 1-75, any info you need will be found in 4600 model manuals

The 4100 was exactly the same as the 4600 SU, but with a smaller displacement engine, 183 ci instead of the 201 ci engine used on all of the rest of the 4xxx series models of the time. And from the parts drawings it looks like the 4100 was available with either manual or power steering, but the 4600 SU was only available with power steering.
