Ford 5000 SOS Cable Adjustment?

I noticed a couple of weeks ago that my 72 5000 w/SOS was not locking into "Park" consistently. Sometimes it would, other times it would roll forward a foot or two then stop. I played with it a little today and if I tap the SOS lever with my palm a couple of times, it seems to engage in park. Not having taken it apart yet, what is involved in this adjustment? Is it just a cable and set screw?? or more complicated?

Thanks, Dave

More complicated. I'd hafta study up on the 5000 to know the procedure. On others it involves separating the cable from its stub and turning the stub. 5000 is different from all others and having never worked on one, I'm not certain how it adjusts.

I'm also not certain that's your problem.

Adjustment is fairly simple. Shift it into 10th gear and remove the nut where the conduit threads onto the transmission case. Pull up on the
tube and you should see the split point in the cable. Separate the two cables and then twist the cable in the tranny one complete turn. Put
the assembly back together (be sure to tighten the nut) and then try it. If the problem is even worse, take it back apart and twist it two
turns in the opposite direction. Keep adjusting as required until you get a firm park, and yet still maintain 10th gear as well - it can be a
fine line.

Take care of this issue before someone gets run over and killed. Think along the lines of the engine running while someone is hooking up a
PTO shaft in the back, and then it slips into reverse. That would not be a good ending.

Tell me again why you guys like these things?

Try upshifting on the fly using your crashbox with a plow or disc in the ground and let me know how that works out for you. I'll take the convenience over the safety issue, because I know how to adjust the shift cable on a SOS. If I'm certain it's in park, I'm not scared of it at all.

That said, if fuel economy was my main concern, I'd have an 8-speed over a SOS.

Hey, I wanted to give a shout out to Bern regarding this SOS cable adjustment. It took me a few weeks to get to the repair, but after following your instructions I had success with one turn counterclockwise. I would have never guessed in a million years that this was how the cable was adjusted.
Thanks for your help! - Dave
