paint color for Naa and 960 ford tractors

I have an NAA and a 960 ford. Isn't the color of these tractors different then the 861 tractors? i'm asking about the grey and the red. If so can anyone give me the paint code #'s Thanks Ed

The X01 series received a new shade of red with more of an orange tint than the previous Vermilion red.

No, they're the same. If you mean what parts were painted what color, they were like the 8N with Vermillion (Red) for the cast iron parts and Ford Medium Grey, M13243 for the sheet metal. Supposedly the later XX1 red was a more orangy shade, but I don't know, all the FORD RED paint sold today is way too orangy for my tastes. I found about 3 brands that match the original Ford Vermillion. The TISCO IH RED TP-110 is the closest to the original. The 2nd is a PPG brand I stumbled on by accident -see pictures. The 3rd was a brand I never could remember where I got it and never saw it again. In 2001 I had a batch of the John Smith GM CENTARI RED mixed and it was a tad too orangy fo me. The TISCO TP-240 is a close match to the Medium Grey. The CNH IRONGARD Grey is almost identical.

As the late Dell always said, "...you can paint it any colour you like (except yeller N' green) it's your tractor..."

To anyone who is concerned with the difference both the red and grey changed in 1958 for the XX1 tractors. The red changed from vermilion to "orange red" and the grey changed to gray with a slight tan and yellow tint. When you see them side by side in the sunlight the difference is obvious.

Beating another paint discussion to death :)

Getting close to finishing up my 841. Anyone know the paint code from PPG for the Orange Red? I've looked into Tisco, CNH and Van Sickle. Some of the archive posts tell me that the Tisco is cheap paint and won't keep it's shine. From what I've read here CNH is selling Tisco. I spoke with Van Sickle and was told that the flash time is at least 4 hours and dry time is 12 hours. Temp needs to be at least 65 degrees. I'm here in northern NJ and I won't see that temperature for a long while. I also can't have paint drying for 12 hours. I'll be spraying it outside. I'm very used to spraying PPG paints. Expensive, yes, but I've been using it for 30 plus years. Dollar Bill listed the codes in this thread, but there wasn't one from PPG for the Red/Orange whatever it's called. I did find 71969 for a PPG color called "Ford New Red" which may be what I'm looking for, but my monitor shows it as plain red (which may not display the color as it is). I realize there is no "accurate" color, but I want the 1958-1964 Orange Red, not the pre-1958 Vermillion. My paint supplier probably won't mix me a sample either.

I am glad to hear that you are trying to get the "orange red". I can't help you with a code, I take an unmolested part to the paint store and they digitally analyze it and whip me up the same thing. The numbers that dollar bill gave you are probably correct. Just make sure to get enough so that you can paint the starter and genny red.

I found the "correct" grey from Dollar bill's post. The Orange I took to my paint supplier and matched as best I could from the color chip chart as I could not find the PPG number for the Orange-Red.Ended up with what PPG calls "Orange Spitfire". Seems pretty close to what little original paint I had left. I should have the tractor completed by the end of this month and I'll post pics showing how it turned out.

Hmm interesting, so these are then the elusive mystery codes for ford 1958 medium gray (greenish tint) and red/orange???
I'll go to my local ppg store today to see if they have a color chip , I believe they told me the other day that it's 25 bucks to make spray can sample.
Yesterday before I saw your post I did order a quart of each color through tsc in the majic brand antique series, my plan was to do a test sample of each then get them scanned in ppg and centauri.
So one way or another I will get the period correct colors for my 861D 🥳

As long as you are happy with the color and you don't get arrested by the tractor show paint police, they should look great.

Pretty sure back in the day the colors were't that consistent, since humidity and temperature plays into the final color. The factories aren't like they are today. I do find that the base primer will affect the final color. I primed with PPG DP74LF, which is a red oxide. When I painted the tractor, the color was bright orange. Really bright. But after it cured for about a few weeks, it darkened to what I believe is "correct". Or close. Had I used a grey primer it might have turned out a little too bright after curing. So far so good, and I'm pleased with it. The tractor police were sniffing around, but they didn't have a warrant to get into my garage to look :D

Tugman, apparently with the Magic you have a 50-50 chance, LOL.

Yup I agree I just got tired of beating my head against a wall trying to find "thee code".
So we'll see, that's why I only ordered quarts 😁

I have a monopoly get out of jail free card.... somewhere....
If I can get it to the original posters gray I'll be very happy 😊
