Need some cam # help

I am trying to find a used cam for a '63 4000 172 diesel. A guy I called to Lakeside farm equipment, in Wis. and asked, he called me and left a message (yes I still have a answering machine) told me he has a cam with the pn# DIML6250A on it. with a 84 tooth gear.

I told him I had to have "310377" and with "diesel" stamped on it. Otherwise it's not for a diesel. it's for a gas only!

I have searched the internet, and have not found this number. Any idea what it's to? a older gas, maybe, but I don't think a diesel.

Yep, still trying to get mine running. I didn't think having a diesel, they would not have a replacement cam for them anywhere.

Thanks, Pat

On CNH partstore it looks like it might be out of an industrial engine. You go to 4000 diesel and click on parts unique to the industrial engine and cam comes up as D9JL6250D. Someone told me that you have to go to the industrial partsbook to look up some things. The industrials cam and crank gears have more teeth on them.

Here pics of part number right out of dealer manual. It says both cams are same part number. First pic is of gas, lp, and kerosene cam 53/up , second pic is 144 and 172 diesel 58/up. Same part numbers both cams, I just cant see any reasoning to forge a different cam. This is an old original manusl, it has no industrial engines in it. You should probably send a shout out to Tony Jacobs as he's been all over these engines.

David, I still believe they are different because of the timing of the pump drive gear. After '64 the are the same cam. I think they just sold a diesel cam after that, because you can turn the dist to where you need it, unlike a diesel pump. Only so little of movement.

You were going to check your cams, did you ever find out if you had one. if so shoot me a e-mail.

Thanks, Pat

(quoted from post at 22:39:33 09/25/18) Hi Pat, welcome back. I'll look in my parts book and see what I find.

I've still been around on here, just not posting. I have been busy with that dozer, which is now done, and rebuilding the end of my house. Then I almost cut the end of my index finger off, with my table saw. I now have the stiches out, and healed on the outside, but not on the inside yet, the bone is tender. Dumb, dumb, dumb!

D1 is 1971, M is Mercury and L is industrial engines so the M&L probably don't go together, and 6250 is not the base number for a camshaft.

I talked to a guy today that has a cam from a industrial 192 diesel. He's going to call me back in the morning.

Is it the same as the one for a '63 172 diesel?

Thanks, Pat

D = 70's, 9 = 1969, J = industrial engine, L = industrial engine operations, parts and service, Cam base is USUALLY 6251, but who knows what the spaghetti benders now running the parts is doing, D = 4th variation (third CHANGE). In '99 when the big changes were being made the CNH guys told us that under FIAT Geotech there were 11 different parts numbering systems and they were trying to integrate then into one global system. Case AG, Case Industrial, New Holland AG, New Holland Industrial, Laverda, Kobelco, Fait Trattori (AKA Hesston in North America),and several others, those are the ones I remember.

I did some more checking and I do have base number incorrect, 6250 is camshaft at least on the web sites I checked, I'm going to have to try and see where I came up with the 6251. Out to the farm and get out my old paper parts books.

I'm going to buy this cam from a industrial 192 diesel, if someone can tell me, if it's the same, as the 172 diesel cam.

I can't find out anything about a industrial 192 diesel engine at all.

Thanks, Pat
