First post, been reading for a while. Found a lot of help on here and hope someone can answer a question for me. Are the distributor cam and weights for the mechanical advance on a 601 series the same on the N series? If anyone has just replaced the springs and could share a few tips that would be even better as it's an expensive part when the rest of the assembly is good.

Nope, they are different. The breaker plate is the same though.

01 & N series rotate in opposite directions and not interchangeable. If you mechanism still functions , even though one spring may be broken, then you should really be just fine, because all the advance is in at normal operating speed anyway and it still backs off sufficiently to start the engine. I have run that way for decade or two.

You will never notice it with two broken springs either! But you might notice your bank account being short $125 if you went to NH for a new one!!

believe you Wayne. I have an old Farmall SMTA who's advance rusted stuck (at no advance). It seemed to be slow to rev & always ran hot. When I discovered why, I simply set static timing to normal static plus full centrifugal and it has performed flawlessly for many years since. Other than consideration for those using a hand crank, they shouldn't have troubled themselves with centrifugal advance on a tractor. Normal operation is idle at startup , hook up, and shutdown.....other wise it is wide open all day.
