I have a FO-31 book and going to time motor. I checked timing before messing with anything and its 10 degrees btdc at 600 rpms and 20 degrees at 1400 rpms.Book says run at high idle and retard timing to 30 degrees and shut motor off. Then disconnect and plug vacuum advance line and run at high idle and should be 18 degrees btdc. Then motor still high idle and vacuum disconnected reset to 22 degrees btdc then reduce to slow idle and timing should be 0-6 btdc.I have a question on whats high idle and whats low idle. Also can you just use timing light with vacuum connected.I haven't used a timing light in 25 years, Or does someone have a better way to time motor. Thanks for your advice and thoughts.

I just timed my 2000 not long ago. Real PITA. Since you have to lay under it to see marks it's best to have a helper to work the throttle. Mine has a snow plow frame on it to make it worse. Low idle is idle speed. High idle is throttle wide open with no load.

Back when I ran gassers, at idle (600ish rpms) distributor CW till cough, cough, CCW till cough, cough, set it in the middle and lock her down. Don't look back!

That procedure is to verify the centrifugal and vacuum advance is working correctly and for trouble shooting.

AND... if the are working correctly, then you would set the points gap and move on.
