Ford 860 won't hold a hydraulic lift

Once I've raised the hydraulics, they will no longer hold and drop down slowly. Hydraulic oil is full, and there are no leaks. What is causing this? A leak or a failed seal or what? How can I find out and fix what is wrong?

Lift comes up and drifts down after a while is the classic sign of a leak, most likely the O-ring on the piston is shot.

Load your heaviest implement on the lift and take a peek through the inspection covers to see where leak is coming from.

Thanks for this Bill. If the piston seal is shot, do I have to take off the big seat plate under the seat to replace it, or
can I do it through the side inspection cover?

Top cover will need to come off to access the ram. Verify leak before disassembly. Likely ram is leaking but it could be something else too.
