generator voltage

I checked the voltage on my ford 3 cyl ford tractor after the gen light started coming on after using the headlights and was 12.6. I took the generator off and cleaned it up and sanded the commutator and brushes and replaced the voltage regulator. I didn't polarize the generator and checked the voltage at the battery it was 14.4. I let it run about 1400 rpms and checked it 20 minuets later the voltage was 15.4 is that normal? Should I polarize the generator ? Thanks for your thoughts and advice Joe

t is polarized just fine! Otherwise it would not be charging. Don't fix it if it ain't broke....or it soon will be.

It's overcharging now - 15.4 volts is not normal, it's too high. Unless you want to be putting water in that battery every six months, I'd suggest you either try and adjust the voltage regulator, or else convert the whole package over to an alternator. And, like JMOR said, it does not need polarizing. You only do that when it's not charging at all. You have the opposite problem now.

Don't be skeered to tweek it they are touchy I have done one used Berns advice keep at it till I was satisfied... Even then it changed everytime I started it and rev the engine...

They do tend to move around before you fudge with it much keep a check on it, it may stabilize... If not tweek it....
