running lean

my 3 cyl 3000 is running lean and causing it to run a little hot and low power . yesterday I was cutting hay pulling a 479 conditioner had plenty of power and temp was fine and running cooler and more power than usual . Finished the first field shut tractor off for a hour or so and started second field and notice loss of power and temp running close to the red. still able to cut hay but had to drop a gear. I think its been running a little lean for a while but first field yesterday was the best its ran in a while. I'm going to clean the gas filters and all screens.Which carburetor screw is the lean /rich screw? Does anyone have any thoughts or advice? Yesterday when I Started was the best and the coolest the tractor has ran in a good while
Thanks for the help Joe

First thing that comes to mind is chaff in the radiator and blocking some of the air flow. very common when cutting or mowing hay. carefully flush it out with a water hose till you can see through it. DO NOT USE HIGH PRESSURE and bend the FINs closed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also seen that when something in the cutter-conditioner is binding up and loading more.

timing or points gap could be off...

and the main jet could be partially plugged from external_link gas gooping it up with crud...

A really good carb cleaner added to a tank of fuel will usually help open up the main jet unless its a piece of metal stuck in the jet. BUt I mean really good, not the watered down crud they sell at most places.

I clean the radiator fins before I started. Like I said
the first field that I cut lots of power and temp was
normal. Shut it down And had lunch started back up
and less power and temperature close to red. Does
anyone know how to tell if it?s running lean? Thanks
joe

I'm not saying it's not possible, but that's not the normal complaint
from the Holley carbs. They do tend to have some trouble with
fuel flow though. Have you tried leaving the choke pulled out a
bit to see if that helps? It's a test only, not a fix for sure.
