4000 select o speed starting issue

Since the knob needs to be all the way down to start, and assuming that by "move" you mean that you have to persuade the knob to go a little more than where it wants to be in order for the starter to crank, it certainly sounds like you need to take up on the cable a little. Consult your manual.

You did not mention what year 4000, however I think they are all similar. The start safety switch is mounted inside the top cover and is activated
by a cam that opens the switch when the shift selector is in park. That position is rather touchy but cable adjustment usually all it needs. As
stated by others, use the manual for your model.

(quoted from post at 07:00:21 07/12/18) I have to move shifter to get it to start. Can anyone tell me if the cable needs adjustment or is electrical the issue

Yep! Cable adjustment.

Just bought the tractor and in another post I gave the serial number.
Not sure yet what year but maybe 63.waiting on help with that. I wanted to be sure what year it is before I purchased any manuals.
Thanks for the info and help.

close . . . but no cigar! 8) The cam closes the safety start switch to provide a ground for the starting system.

I would say that it is close enough and gets the function across plenty well enough to earn a cigar in my book.
