Brake Pedal Removal

Ford 2000; 3 cyl. Gas; 4/1 trans....The latch that locks the two break pedals together needs to be repaired so that the 'handle' drops in a slot to keep it from moving left or right. Somehow, the tubular body of the latch has gotten bent open and vibration will cause the latch to disengage the left pedal. To make this fix, I need to remove the gas pedal that has the locking slot (can't remember if it's left or right) and whang the tube back to where it belongs. Is it a big deal to remove the pedal and is there anything that I need a heads-up on in this procedure? It looks pretty simple but I've been fooled plenty of times before. Thanks.

3 words, brake spring pliers.

They take the work out of removing and installing the brake pedal springs.

Now that washer idea is worth remembering. My left pedal spring was missing when I got the tractor but was able to go the hardware store and find a good match to the right pedal spring. I remember that it took some tugging to get the spring connected at each end. Thanks for the tip.

Hard part for me was getting the durn return springs put back on. I ended up using my vice to stretch the springs then put washers between the coils. This left them long enough to be able to slip on without killing myself.

Thanks for the good instructions. I know where you're coming from regarding operating the brakes independently. Mostly, I like to link them when I set the parking brake.

Been so long since I've used that latch that I completely forgot it was there.

Both brakes have to be adjusted equally to have good braking with the pedals latched together, also I use the brakes to much to assist with turns to have them latched together.

As for your question, disconnect the linkage, remove the clip and washer on the cross shaft and slide the right pedal off the shaft.

The left pedal is clamped the the cross shaft and aligns to a key in the shaft, a fair bit harder to remove and care must be taken when reinstalling not to push the cross shaft out the left side and damage the oil seal.
