ford 801 901 differential casting numbers

I understand there is a difference between the two. But can anyone provide the casting number for each or both. The guy at the salvage yard doesn't know the difference and I want to make sure he ships the correct one. Unfortunately I'm on the road and I can't go look at mine to know for sure. Thanks for the help.

I found it for 801 CONN 4204A, 901 is the same number for the differential case assembly. They show 4 different part numbers fot the center housing but I cant read the breakdown of the fitment. I used to be able to but since they "improved" their system I cant see all the info anymore. You might still want to check with dealer.

If you are referring to the complete center housing .Per NH parts site here, PN 312477. Give this a shot, The 901 has a arm bracket, one on either side, at the bottom of the case to attach the lift arms . The 801 just has pins directly out of the center housing

Well, I got to look at both of them today side by side and I noticed something. On the 801 housing at the rear are some easy to see vertical rounded ridges that run across the housing just below the center link attachment point. On the 901 those are absent. The 901 also seems to measure just a little bit more narrow than the 801 housing does.

Part numbers and casting numbers are usually two completely different numbers. The casting number is for the engineers who designed the casting, and the part number is for the parts inventory system, and they are rarely the same number for the same casting /part.

A casting design may change over time and so the casting number will be different from one minor design change to the next, but it will still be tracked by the same part number. There may be 3, or 4, or even possibly 6 different casting numbers that would be the same part number for a 901 center housing. Same goes for an 801 center housing. Just look at how many different casting numbers were used for the 172 ci red tiger engine block, or the 201 ci 3 cylinder engine block.

That's a good explanation and since the these two models use different housings the casting numbers will identify which model's housing I'm looking at. See my other
post for a physical difference I noticed today between these two housings.

Kirk, I don't believe that is correct. The 900 axle housing has two anchor points for the lift arm bracket. But it does take the NAA gasket between the axle housing and the center housing. I have replaced 4 900 axle housings, two with mounted pickers and one of those in sub 0 temperatures . I really remember that one.

ring gear will be on other side? ,901 with drop case will be the small ones [601-2000 ] 901 with out drop case will be the same as 801.

Seems to me the 801 casting should have one hole cast at the top of the casting for the top link bracket. The 901 will have holes just above the PTO for the top link bracket which is much longer than the 801. 01 series will also have holes under it for the brake cross over shaft.
