Ford 641 RPM Problems

Hello everyone I am new to this forum and I bought a 1962 Ford 641 about a year ago. This tractor has always had erratic RPM problems but it is getting to the point I cant run the tractor in fear of ruining the motor. The RPMs will shoot up to max or down to min with just a slight bump of the lever. I already replaced the governor but this didn't change anything. The tractor runs like a champ otherwise. Has anyone else come across problems like these and found a fix? Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Once had a similar problem. Turned out to be the butterfly valve in the carb was fully closing. Engine would go to max RPMs. Check linkage from governor to carb.

Welcome to the forum Dylan! Glad to have you.

Just so I understand - Engine speed isn't surging up/down sometimes referred to as "hunting" but the problem is when you advance the throttle slightly, the engine over revs - Correct?

Did you readjust your linkages after replacing the governor?
If not, the procedure is covered in the FO-20 Shop manual.

When you replaced the governor, did you pull crankshaft pully and front cover to replace governor assembly mounted on nose of crankshaft? Did you make sure cover bushing was good? If you did and problem persists, the problem is likely in adjustment. Before replacing anything else,I suggest buying a service manual and/or looking at another "hundred series" tractor to see A.what holes linkage and spring are in B. Lingth of linkage rods C. examine spring very close for size and strength.

I cant say about the problem but you might want to change your username. You never know what is trolling the internet. They might google your name and come looking for a piece of steel.
