So my tractor has a exposed drive shaft that gets grass and weeds wrapped around it during bush hogging. Apparently only the series II tractors came with shields or covers to protect the drive shaft. Anyone have a idea how to correct this?

The shield was available on the early ones... it just wasn't standard equipment. Ours was retrofitted after 1 day on the mower lol. Call a scrap yard. There ought to be some around. Anything that used the ZF center drive axle should fit, for a given chassis model. Otherwise, slip some big-O on it. Rod

Bern's suggestion is interesting, we have a big ole press brake at work and looking at the guard on my 4630, it is 2 piece with a gap in the middle, held together by straps and it bolts up to the castings above through the holes in it. Would not be hard to make, though I would consider driveshaft carrier bearings, the grease zerks, be nice if I did not have to remove the shaft cover to grease the carrier bearings.

I had the same issue with my 7710. Bought a length of 8" PVC pipe, split it in half with a circular saw, and made a front bracket out of flat steel. I was able to bolt the half pipe directly to the transfer box on the rear.

I agree. Any idea who might have a shield? Dealer was totally no help at all. These parts are getting old now so not many people versed any more on how to find this stuff. I ran the part number I found online but came up with very limited info.

I don't think it would be too difficult for a fab shop to bend ("brake") something up for you. You can then make the brackets similar to the pics in the parts book.

Buy a shield - or make one.

Let me expand on my comments...I'm pretty sure the shield on the newer ones can be retrofitted to the old ones.
