starter issues

I have a 1962 Ford 4000 SOS and I am having issues with the starter, or at least I think it is the starter.

After the motor starts, the starter will continue to run. If the motor dies, the starter motor continues to run. There is only one wire connected to the starter from the battery.

Also, I guess that since the starter continues to run, the battery will run down in just a couple of minutes.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what went wrong?

It could be either the solenoid has welded it self up or the starter button is not coming back up or you have a short in the wire from the starter button to the solenoid. Pull the small wire off the solenoid and see if it then turns over and if it does the solenoid has welded it self up if it does not then you have a short in the wire or a button problem

I did have to put on a new starter button as the old one fell apart. The tractor is supposed to start in PARK only but now starts in any gear. This thing is starting to drive me nuts. I will take the small wire off of the cylenoid and see what happens. Thanks and I may want to get back to you for more help.

Thanks again.

Forgot to Tell you that the tractor is starting with the key and not the starter button in any gear. Not supposed to do that either.

11Acres, Young fella Old apparently missed that you are working on an SOS. Your starter button wiring is completely different from a four or five speed starter button. It should not crank by key but only by the push button on the underside of the horizontal surface under your PTO handle. It is entirely possible that a previous owner has replaced the two position ignition switch with a three or four position key switch, and has also bypassed the neutral lock-out switch, and the start button. You need to check your wiring through against the schematic in your repair manual. You should post back here when you need more help so that more than one guy can advise you in case one makes an error.

Are you saying it started only in Park before replacing the starter button? If so, you have somehow provided a constant ground to that new starter switch. A bare wire against steel or a terminal against steel or something.

Old may have missed the fact this is an SOS, but that does not inherently change the way the starter system works, it's still activated by applying a ground to the solenoid.

Therefore, previous suggestions that your solenoid has stuck in the on position are possible. It's also possible the new starter switch is faulty. It's further possible that the wiring to the solenoid from the starter button is shorted and that the wiring from the starter button to the transmission is shorted out.

Did this also happen after new starter button install? Is the key switch of original design?

So as soon as you turn the key switch to the on position, the starter engages without touching the starter switch?

If the above is true, you have a short to ground in the start switch circuit. (see my previous response).

Does turning the key switch off when the engine dies disengage the starter? If so check the circuit on the small S terminal wire from the solenoid to the starter button.
