Distributor Spring Clip

This little part was new to me and it has been explained how important it is, and how to install it properly. My question is: Why was this part used? All other vehicles I've had used rotors that fit snugly on the distributor shaft and didn't use a part that is easily bent or lost. The Ford folks were smart and very inventive..., so there must be a really good reason. Anyone know the history about this thing that was used on Ford tractors, cars, and trucks for a long time? Well you know ford they always have a better idea but in this case NOT. I have never seen a good reason for it but have had more then one go flying and get lost or more then one guy call me to work on his ford and found it gone and had to order it so the tractor would run

As old said, do not lose it, or you will have to get a new one.

They really fly well.
