Thanks all for taking time out to reply , I think after reading all your replies it has to be a special utility model that takes the smaller 2000/3000 tank I'll get them to check the size of my tank against the tank with that part number when I call them that should give me a definite answer ....
Thank again all much appreciated

If my deciphering of the parts site is correct, the 4000 SU should use the same tank as the 2000 & 3000, while the regular 4000 and 4400 use a different tank. The original part number for your tank was C5NN9002H, which has been superseded by part number E3NN9002AB.

Good to know, I've never looked at the model number on my 4000SU because I knew what it was, my service manuals are early editions and don't show the SU.
When I got my 4000SU it had burnt the from the steering wheel forward and I had to replace the fuel tank, this is why I know it takes a 3000 fuel tank that is smaller than the standard 4000 tank.

D1414 is the model number for a diesel 4000 SU. 2M05B is the unit number for a build date of December 2, 1972, 2nd shift. C365852 is the serial number for a late 1972 U.S. built tractor. My guess is that you got a tank for a regular 4000, not an SU. There's also the possibility that your tractor was put together with parts from two or more tractors, so the stamped numbers may no longer be accurate.

D1414C is the model number but your numbers appear to be off.
D= 4000 model
14= not in my book, should be (10= Ag all purpose, 11= LCG, 12= Highway, 13= Rice, 20= Row Crop, 30=Vineyard, 31= Narrow, 40= Utility, 50= Industrial)
1= Diesel
4=Independent 540 pto
C= 8 speed trans
2M05B is production date of 12/05/72 B shift
Serial # C365852 is correct for a late 72 to early 73 model.
If yours is a utility model like my 4000SU it uses the smaller fuel tank for a 3000.

Recollections of a John Deere GP - by Charlie Cook. I grew up on my dad's 280 acre general farm in Western Michigan. Dad's only tractor when I was very young was the old GP. My first recollection of this tractor was when dad allowed my brother and myself to ride on the tractor with him driving. One of us would sit on the left fender (away from the clutch) and other would sit on the gas tank and hold onto the crankcase breather pipe.
