7700 ford steering motor seal

Got a 1980 7700 with I think a Ross type steering. Can I replace the rotor seal (#27 in figure 53 page 23 in IT book) will steering column in the tractor ?or would it be better to pull the column out? Has anyone ever or know anyone who has ever changed it while it was still in the tractor. Book says great care must be taken to protect finally lapped matting surfaces. Just need to put a new seal in it.

I don't have an IT book to look at, but if it's the lower seal, I myself would not try that. Gravity would be working against you in that situation.

Do yourself a favor and pull it off, its a lot easier to clean the thing up before dis
assembly and any parts you drop will be easier to find. I have replaced a few,but never
even attempted it on the tractor.

You will have to remove the orbitrol to replace the bottom sleeve seal. There are too many parts that will fall out. I replaced an orbitrol on an
8600 one time because the customer thought he could change it without removal. Things went crunch.

It's a while since I changed one.... but I would definitely remove the motor from the tractor. It's much easier to manipulate on a bench...
and that 'crunch' will cost you probably a couple hundred bucks these days, if you can still get the commutator. Force is not your friend on
this job...
