The guy i purchased it from said it is a 1976 445 but i see not markings that corroborate that. The tag under the hood is gone. that pad near the starter reads 9A050 *C594984. It has a 3cyl diesel engine, hi/low shifter, 2 reverses and i think 4 forward gears, front loader, 3 point hitch and a pto. Anybody know know for real what this is and what year it is? third party image third party image

The KD3 at the beginning says it is a 445.
The 1 says it has a diesel engine.
The 4 says it has independent 540 rpm PTO

There should be a letter at the end designating which transmission it has. As I said earlier, your description of the shifting pattern sound like it is a 6x4 manual reversing transmission, so the extra letter at the end should be a K.

Here is a link to a document that I put together from several sources that helps to decode Ford tractor model numbers:

There will be another number further back...scape some more paint off to get the the 3rd secret decoder number.

serial numbers are sequential.. date codes are the date it was put on the assembly line.. the 3rd number will be the model number... You have only uncovered the first two numbers.

check this link out. it;s what led me to believe i could decode it. but it stopped in 1975. http://www.springfieldbiz.com/oaktree/codes_short2.html i willl check the rough part of the casting for a model number tomorrow. thats really what i was after. just to see if it really was a 445

*C594984 is the serial number. It should actually have another star at the end, like *C594984*. There is no "decoding" of a serial number. The C at the beginning says that it was assembled at the plant in the US. If it started with an A it would have been assembled in the plant in Antwerp Belgium and if it began with a B it would have been assembled at the plant in Basildon UK. The "C" serial numbers for the US made tractors are pretty well documented as to the starting serial number for a particular year, but the A & B serial numbers are not as well documented. If you view this site in classic view there is a link on the left hand side of the page that you can click on to look up Ford tractor serial numbers, but it only covers the "C" serial numbers for the 1965+ tractors.

The numbers after the letter were just sequential numbers for each successive tractor as it rolled off the assembly line no matter which specific model it was. They assembled pretty much all of the various models on the same line at that time so one serial number could be on a 445 and the next serial number could have been put on a 2600, or a 5600 or any other model that was being made at the same time period.

correct. it was a typo the number is 9A05B which would be 1979, jan 5th, shift B. the other number on the pad is which i cannot seem to decode is *C594984. any idea how that decodes?

The one number you found, 9A050, is not correct. It is more likely 9A05C, as the last character should be an A, B or C. That would mean that it left the assembly line on January 5th of some year that ended in a 9 during the afternoon shift.

The serial number doesn't need to be decoded. C594984 is a 1979 serial number.
The model number, which you don't have yet, would need to be decoded. It is most likely there, up in the rough part of the casting, above the 9A05C. You might need to clean that area up and remove some paint to see it though.
The transmission sounds like a manual reversing trans, which would be 3 forward and 2 reverse speeds on the main shfter plus the high/low ranges on the secondary shifter for a total of 6 forward and 4 reverse speeds, so it is commonly called a 6x4 manual reverser.

The PTO is most likely independent with the hydraulic pump in the right side of the center housing.

So with the diesel engine, if it is a 445, then the model number would most likely be KD314K

KD3 - model designation for a 445

1 - diesel engine

4 - independent PTO

K (at end) - 6x4 manual reversing transmission

Looks like a 445, 9A05B built Jan 05 79 B shift.

Should be a manual reversing trans with two reverse and three forward gears in each range giving a total 6 forward and four reverse gears.

Obviously that draft will increase if the implement runs deeper than eight inches, and decrease if it runs shallower. Why not use that draft fact to control the depth of work automatically?
