3 Cyl Diesel vibration

4000 SU at higher rpm shakes so bad it's like the hoods and radiator are gonna fall off. been having problem blowing head gasket last time had the head resurfaced and blew again within a couple months. at that time the center cylinder looked wet from not burning all the fuel we had the injectors gone through but it didn't run any different still had the terrible shakes. I now have the block at the machine shop to get decked and sleeved. the crank and rods check out good, can a weak cylinder really make it shake this bad? I'm thinking no and don't want to put it together and still have this same problem.

I've had my 4600 running on two when restarting after running out of fuel or changing the fuel filter. Yes, it will make them run that rough. If the injectors are good, the problem may be the injection pump.

One other thought would be to check to make sure your valves are opening properly. If an intake isn't opening, or an exhaust isn't closing, it won't be able to fire that cylinder, which could be the cause of that one being wet.

I think you have an injector or pump issue that is over fueling one or more cylinders, the wet cylinder should have been an indicator to stop right there and look at fuel.

At one time something went through that cylinder the piston was beat up on top and sleeve scratched and piston scuffed. It wasn't a dead cylinder but it wasn't up with the others. I just didn't think that would make it vibrate so violently, does make more sense though now that I think about it, it's actually throwing the engine out of balance. I had an old car with drive shaft out of balance and it would vibrate but only at high speed.

I have a 4000su. Over the years it started to vibrate above 1800rpm. Finally, we disassembled the engine looking for the source of this problem. We found nothing. So we done a complete rebuild after which it stopped this vibration. I still do not understand why it vibrated. We did NOT change the injectors or the injector pump after the rebuild.

Check the shaft bearings on the water pump. Remove the drive fan belt and reach in and see if you have excess play on the pump shaft.

the water pump is loose I am replacing it. picked up the block and crank this morning will start reassembly today I'm a lot more confident now it will run as it should.

An update in case it can help someone else in the future, got it back together and using it for 2 weeks runs great so yes a weak cylinder can make it shake the whole tractor.
