'61 Fordson Dexta - S/N 77310 - Simms pump with pnuematic govenor. Ford Manual FO-201 page 17 says Flywheel "Spill" marked should be aligned, then the "lower of the two marks on the timing gear adapter should be aligned with the mark on the injection pump. Problem - When I do this, there are no marks present. When I continue to turn the flywheel I find a "TDC" (Top Dead Center?) mark on the flywheel. I then notice a "C" now aligned on the Injector Pump. The tractor has a starting problem, but after I get it going, It runs fine and has plenty of power.(I pulled a 3 bottom plow to plow my garden) Is this part of my starting problem. or If its not broke, dont fix it? Any comments would be appreciated.

John, I'm looking in the factory repair manual. With the flywheel at "Spill" you should see 2 marks on the injection pump gear. The 2 marks are approx. 2 teeth apart. The upper one is marked "S", which should line up with the pointer when the flywheel is at TDC. When the flywheel is at "spill" (point of injection), the lower of the two marks should be aligned with the stationary pointer, but from the picture I'm looking at it appears to be just a line with no other ID. No mention in this book anywhere about a "C". I've never done one of these myself, hope this info can be of some help. If it runs good, I doubt your starting problem is timing related, more likely low compression.

Hi Orville.
I was searching the web and came across your timing problem with the Dexta.(dated May '99)
I suppose that you have it fixed by now and that it is just a distant memory. I have the same problem at the minute. I took off the pump to repair a cracked cylinder block. When I put the pump back on it was difficult to start. I made the mistake of using easy start which did the trick for a few days. Now it refuses to start. I've adjusted the timing 4 or 5 times to no avail. I would be interested to know how you solved your problem. By the way - where do you live? I live in Co. Armagh, Ireland.
Best wishes and hope to hear from you!

I own a Fordson Major and I had to pull the motor and replace the overdrive shifter. I remove the fuel pump and the motor was cranked over. Now I need to find out how to set the timing back up. I know about setting the two marks up on the fuel pump, but how do I go about getting the piston to TDC? It is a 4 cyclinder Diesel Industrial Backhoe Tractor. Thanks for any help, Ron rcma@access2k1.com

It's been many years but I used to be a Ford tractor mechanic when these pneumatic Dexta were fairly new. I think you might improve the starting and performance of the engine by increasing the maximum fuel delivery by breaking the maximum delivery seal on the screw with the jam nut at the bottom and backing it out about 2 turns. If this causes too much smoke at a hard pull you can turn it back in a little. However it might make it easier to start.
