Left Rear Axle Bracket

Getting ready to assemble the rear end of my '57 641 Workmaster and noticed a bracket bolted to the inside of the left axle trumpet/housing. Wondered what is its purpose. Looks like it fits close to the ring gear. Enlighten me please.

Under high loads, the pinion tends to push the ring gear out of mesh. Sometimes a backside support keeps them in mesh.
