Ford 801 power steering

I recently purchased an 841 ford. The power steering was not working and oil was coming out the center of the steering wheel. So, after rebuilding the power steering pump, new power steering control valve (boy are those cheap, wow!), new seals, steering shaft, and several other bearings, and misc. parts in the steering column, now my power steering is working great, but only when I turn the wheel to the right. When turning to the left there isn"t hardly any power assist. If I turn the wheel all the way to the left it turns hard, but when turning back to the right it works perfect. I am not sure what could be causing this problem, any ideas? Thanks!

Apparently the big nut on the shaft was not backed off enough. Should be about a 1/6th of a turn.

Try a simple test of the PS valve. Hop up on the tractor, but do not start it. Grab the top of the steering wheel and turn it about 2 inches to the right. It should move easily then encounter some resistance. Release the wheel - it should spring back to where you started. Repeat going left. You should see the same spring back. If you look very closely the steering wheel will go up and down while doing this, but only about 1/16". This is normal operation.

If it only does this going right and not left you have a problem with the springs and plungers in the PS valve.

Kurt,

I turned the wheel on my 860 with power steering and I see what you are talking about with the wheel going back to center. On the 841 I am working on it does not spring back to center when turning to either side. I installed a new control valve as I previously mentioned, and now have it torn apart again. I did notice that this new control valve does not have the 2 different plungers with the 2 balls between them like my old one did. Is this the way they are supposed to be or is this put together wrong? 7 of the 8 plungers in the control valve are identical and have 4 identical springs between them. One of the plungers is different, but the only difference is that it has 2 grooves cut in the plunger instead of 1 groove like the rest of them have? Anybody have any idea if this is the correct assembly? Any help is greatly appreciated, as I'm not sure what else to do. Thanks!

Something sounds strange with that "New" valve to me. As far as I know, all the of hundred series PS valves are the same. with 3 sets of plungers and springs, along with the two caged ball plungers.

Should look like this

An chance you have a picture of what you have? Maybe one of us can identify it. If you can't post the picture, email it to me I can post it for you.

Kurt,

The picture you posted earlier looks identical to my old control valve. On my old control valve, the 2 different plungers with the 2 balls came out of the hole farthest to the left when sitting on top of the tractor looking at it from above. (which is also the hole farthest to the left in your photo). The "new" control valve does not have these different plungers with the balls. The plungers out of the old control valve will not fit the holes in the new control valve. The old plungers are just a touch bigger in diameter. Should this "new" control valve have the 2 different style plungers with the 2 balls between them?

Kurt,

I am not able to post pictures, but do have some. What is your email address so I can email them to you?

thanks

Hope some pictures help ID what you have.

The valve body looks correct to me. But I can't explain the extra groove on the one plunger. I don't think the groove will hurt anything.

Do you have the plungers with the cages and the balls? Are they installed in the correct hole?

Kurt,

No, the "new" control valve did not come with any plungers with the cage and two balls. Maybe they changed the design? Maybe it was assembled from the factory incorrectly? I am not sure. As I said earlier, the power steering works great when turning right, but has very little power assist when turning left. I want to make sure this assembly is correct before I put it back together, again.

Thanks Again for your help.
