I am new to Fords and just picked up a cheap Tw 10. The motor runs strong and it shifts and drives well, the dual power even works! The bad is that the pto turns all the time but seems not to work and the hydraulics don"t work. I was told the problems may be related and that I will have to split the tractor. Where should I look first and what could it be? I have not had time to work on it yet but I think its worth saving.

When you say that the hydraulics don't work, do you mean the 3-point, or the remotes, or both?

Bad news is that the PTO and hydraulics are not related to each other if the dual power works good. The only thing the two systems share is the shaft that drives the pumps, and it is obviously OK if the dual power works. The PTO not stopping is almost a "standard feature" on those models. However, they usually drive just fine, especially the low-powered TW10.

The remotes don't seem to work but occasionally I can get the three point to move but it is usually very slow and sluggish.

How many hours on the tractor? We have to replace the pump in our 8700 as it gets slow to lift when the oil is warm. It has 11400 hours on it. Some say its easier to do the double split to replace the PTO break band. I am going to attempt to do it through the pump cover when we replace the pump this winter.

There is a relief valve on the pump cover housing. It is possible it is suck open? When was
the last time both hydraulic filters were changed?

I would start with some system pressure checks of the low-pressure hydraulic system. Once you have done that, split the tractor behind the trans to service the PTO. You can also remove the main hydraulic pump at that time as well if need be.

You will need to get a hold of a service manual if you know nothing about these machines.

Plan to get a manual soon. The hours and history of the tractor is unknown. It had not moved for 3 years until I got it going Saturday. The 3 point lifted when the tractor first started which I though was odd considering there was no oil on the stick. Once the oil was filled it acted sluggish and didn't want to move again.

I would pull the suction hydraulic filter off and cut it open. If it looks like aluminum paint in the filter folds the hydraulic pump was run dry for too long. How much hydraulic oil did you have to add before it hit the stick?

New baldwin filters from Shoup are less than 1/2 the price of CNH and are made in the USA.

You're probably getting about half the filter compared to the FleetGuard too...
If you buy a case from a FleetGuard/Cummins dealer you can generally get a pretty decent buy. I don't have a lot of confidence in the Baldwin filter media to hold up, particularly if it gets wet.

We had to add about 7 gallons to get it on the stick but it had set for three years with some leaks. It had these problems when it was parked but that's all the previous owner knows. I will get that filter off this weekend.
