how to polorize 6volt regulators on 860

I'm replacing the entire wiring harness on a 1955 860 tractor. Keeping it a 6 volt unit. It has a positive grond. I'm replacing the voltage regulator to make everything new. The regulator has three screws to hook up the wiring. How do I polorize the regulator to the generator. I'm told this is a necessity. Some articles indicate that this polorizing is always necessary when the battery is removed. Advise on this polorizing requirement is appreciated. Also how is it determined whatweires go to what screws?

he regulator has terminals marked A-F-B, (armature, field, battery). There are Armature & Field terminals on the generator, so A to A and F to F (armature wire is larger than field wire). Battery is usually yellow and connects to the B reg terminal. Generally a ground wire (black) from the generator housing to one of the reg mounting screws, too.

Just for the record, reg are not polarized, but generators are polarized. This misconception comes about because most people take the generator polarizing ACTION at the reg. You disconnect the Field wire (at the reg) coming from the generator and for about one second, you touch it to the B or Battery terminal on the reg. You should observe a spark. Your generator is now polarized. Now, re-connect that Field wire to the F terminal of the reg.

The old regulator may be better quality than the new one.Polarizing a generator because the battery is removed if far out.You have to know that some of the information on the internet forums is BS.
