Rebuilt Engine Priming

Have rebuilt 861 and primed the engine with motor oil thru distributor using drill attachment (thanks awthx). This seemed to work great as I did see oil pressure run up as well as things being oiled that I expected to see being oiled ie hydraulic pump gears, distribuor drive etc.
What bothered me is I did not see any oil come out of the rockers, or in general no oil flowing under the valve cover at all.
I ran it for a minute or 2 and turned the crankshaft while running the drill.
Question is should I see any oil from the rockers or for that matter any oil in the head area at all ???
Thanks...Alan

yes.. you should see oil in the top end.

when i rebuilt my 4000 i specifically looked for oil at the top before putting her all back togehter and starting up.

did you get that lil oil tube back in when you put the valve train and push rods back in... the lil oil tube almost looks like a push rod if you look too fast and blink.

It will take at least two minutes for oil to make it to the head, even with engine running. The center bearing of the camshaft is drilled so as to line up with the two holes drilled in the block .When these holes line up (once ever revalution of the cam)the oil will be force up to the head. This will take some time.

I did the same thing on my 660. I got oil pressure just as you did, but never did get oil around the rocker arms. I buttoned everything up and started the tractor. With only a few minutes of running, I took the valve cover off and everything was fine.

Sometimes Ford used the holes in the camshaft that WayneIA mentioned, sometimes they used a camshaft with a groove cut in the journal and sometimes they used a cam bearing with a groove cut in it. The grooved cam or cam bearing will supply oil to the rocker shaft regardless of cam position. The drilled cam will only provide oil when the holes are lined up with the oil galley in the block. If you have a helper who can turn the crankshaft very slowly while you run the drill you can probably locate the cam position where the oil holes are lined up. With the oil system pressurized you should see some oil in the rockers as soon as the cam holes begin to line up.

on my 4000 oil makes it to the head within seconds of startup..

but then awhtx covered the reason why..
