3400 Ring Gear Rivet Repair

Hi Guys, just finished reading the lengthly thread on the rivet repair and I think I will check on mine. What I need to know is after removing the tires can I just unbolt at the trumpet to case interface and pull the drum/axle/trumpet off as one assembly or do I have to break it down and pull the axles from the trumpets first. I have some grinding noises going on it the tractor and I think I should check for the rivets first as this is a 68 model and it was used in a rock pit so go figure!
Thanks
Craig

Yes, you can pull it off as an assembly without disturbing the axle shafts, wheel bearings, brake parts, etc.

I BELIEVE you want to pull off the LH side in order to access the diff. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on that.

I just did this. The first and easiest thing to do to get a look in there is to drain the hydraulic fluid then pull the pto shaft and look through the hole with a flashlight. You should be able to see if you have any rivet heads in the bottom of the differential case. Bern is correct, the left trumpet once removed will allow you to remove the differential gears. They just pull out the left side of the case. Mine took some wiggling and back and forth, but they came out. Yes, you can pull the left trumpet with the axle in place. Unless you have a loader mounted like I do. The loader where it mounts to the trumpet wouldn't allow me to slide the assembly to the left to get the axle splines to come out of the differential gears and clear the differential case. I had to pull the axle out first, then I could move the trumpet out just enough to slide it backwards and free it from the loader mounting bracket. It seems like pulling the left trumpet is the only way to get a good look at the rivet heads on the left side which is where they will shear off. Looking through the pto shaft hole or the fluid filler hole only gets you a look at the right side of the rivet heads which will all be there regardless of any shearing of the rivets. I hope you get your rear end sorted out. No pun intended.

Thanks Everyone, I have to get the tractor in the barn and get to work and check this out. It's hot and muggy here in the deep south so this isn't happening real fast. I'll get back later and let you know what I find out.

Jetbird, I'm new to the 3400 also. The trumpet removal with the loader installed is more than I can tackle right now so how do you remove the PTO shaft to look for the sheared rivet heads? Do you remove the plate at the rear of the tractor where the PTO shft sticks out and then just pull it out or is there some thing else that has to be done first besides draining the fluid.

Thanks

Craig,
This is now on page 4 of Classic view, so you may want to start a new thread.
If I understand though, just drain the fluid and then the 4 bolts around the PTO should be what holds it in.
Keith

Yep, just drain the fluid, remove the 4 bolts on the flange around the pto shaft where it protrudes, and the whole assembly pulls straight out. Post your progress and good luck!

Keith and Jetbird, THANKS for the information. I'll let you know how it goes.
