NAA live pto question

I am no expert, but the NAA did not have live PTO, the 600/800 series came with it as an option (660/860 model) but they would have a 5 speed.

I think there was an aftermarket (rare) option which used the hydraulics to make a live pto, it would be obvious as there would be hydro lines all over to power it.

in short, more than likely it does not have live pto, but it does have live hydro...

The NAA could have live PTO. If it does it will have two shift leavers on the left side plate where most have one leaver to shift the PTO in and out.

The question has already been answered, but I can't resist embellishing a bit.

Live pto on NAA? Not from the factory, but possibly from an aftermarket add-on...maybe even added by the dealer. There are two possible pto add-ons that I'm aware of, both would have a lever on the left side next to the regular pto lever.

One of them is hydraulically activated. The left side lever looks like this:

Notice the hydraulic line running forward. It goes up over the top of the trans and up to an auxiliary hydraulic pump mounted on the tractor's main hydraulic pump.

The live pto pump is that silver looking think attached to the front of the vane pump.

The other live pto version I've seen is a hand clutch (handle on the left side) where you use the hand clutch in addition to the foot clutch. One of them stops forward motion and the other stops the pto...not sure which does what.

So, yes if an NAA has live pto, you can tell without starting the tractor. However since both of these systems are old, rare and without any available replacement parts, you'd better start it to see if the live pto system still operates.

Live pto from the factory didn't start until the Hundred series tractors a couple of years later. They look very similar to NAA tractors and some people confuse them. If you're looking at one of those, just find the flat pad under the air cleaner where the model number is stamped. A tractor with live pto will have a 6 in the middle of the model number (660, 860, 960, 661, 861, 961)

Though the two stage clutch did not come out until the 100 series the NAA did have the live PTO of the type pictured as a factory installed option. It also of course could be dealer installed. Some NAA sales brochures showed it too.

I have 2 new Ford supplied NAA live PTO kits. They will be sold at auction on 4/28/12. See auction list or dixonsauctions.com.

I stand corrected. Thank you! Were both versions available from the factory? Both the hand clutch and the hydraulic version?

Hydraulic was it. I found no data on the non hydraulic hand clutch. The hyd powered clutch unit was operated by a hand lever.

The non-hydraulic hand clutch version that I showed is on a tractor in my back yard. I bought it for Jim Bills and am just holding it until he has a chance to come pick it up. He told me it was probably a Sherman Brothers aftermarket offering.

Yes I knew of those but don't recall seeing one on a tractor. Sherman would be a very likely for the mfgr. One or both of those could be bought for the 8N as well. Real unusual to find one with the manual clutch, very neat.
