I have viewed the electrical diagram posted by John in LA. My tractor does not seem to look like the diagram. More specificaly, my starter cable (see pic) goes directly to my + battery terminal. Is this correct? 1964 Ford 4000 Diesel. Thanks

No it is not right. It should go from the battery into one side of the solenoid and then from the other side of the solenoid to the starter. If you need a picture let me know.

Vito is right - this is not the usual hook-up. But it sure looks like the solenoid is hooked up on the negative side. That way, it puts the switch in the ground leg. Nothing wrong with that, it will work, but its not the way old Henry set them up. If it were mine, I'd switch it around. If you need help with that, just ask.

Your tractor has a starter relay (solenoid) on it and it appears that the starter Ground wire is connected to it. In order for that system to work properly the sarter must be insulated from the transmission. That"s an extremely complicated way to wire it up.

The system would be more than complicated. It would be impossible for it to work as wired.
If the starter were isolated from the transmission there would be no path for electricity to flow back to the battery. If the starter is not isolated from the transmission the only path back to the battery would be threw the starter windings.

In other words if you turned on the lights; glow plugs; ect; electricity would try to find its way back to the battery to complete the circuit. The only path is threw the starter. The starter would try to run and would burn up the small wires of the lights; ect.

It might be as simple a fix as swapping the two cables on the starter and turning the battery around so that short wire could reach the negative post.
If you only swap the wires on the starter and leave the battery alone you would be running the system as positive ground. Not right but it MAY work depending on what other stuff you have in the system.
In the long run following the diagram I have posted to the letter will work out the best.

Yes John in LA. I purchased this tractor a few months ago. Everything was fine for a couple of months then the battery went dead. I think the previous owner had it wired so it would start just to get it sold. It was never wired properly im finding out now. As far as the the diagram goes, this tractor is not utilizing the "foot starter button. It looks like an after market starter button was added to it. It has two red wires going to it. How would this change the diagram? Thanks

The starter button is not a problem. We can work around that.
What we need to know is if the relay (solenoid) is the proper one or if it is a aftermarket make due item also.

Look at your starter push button. I assume it is now in the dash.
Where do the two wires go.
One should go to the relay.
Where does the other go........
The frame or other ground spot
Or to a power source like the key switch or terminal block.

Also tell me does the relay have 1 or 2 small post. Is there a wire on 1 or both of these post. Where do they go.

John in LA I check the tractor and these are the answers to your questions. The two wires coming from the mounted push button starter go right the the relay (solenoid) one on each front small post. The relay has two front small posts and two larger side posts. Also on one of the front small posts is another wire that goes to a position directly above the Regulator there are three connections there and that wire goes on the top.

Also what is the "terminal block" as labeled in your diagram. Is it the thing under the dash that looks like a second solenoid? If it not what is the second solenoid under the dash labeled as? Thanks

OK it sounds like you have a car relay on the tractor. To use it with the aftermarket push button do this.

Look at the diagram. There are 2 wires going to the small post on the relay. The one on the left runs from the relay to the orginal push button on the trans. Just leave this wire off. Do not include it in your wire job. The wire on the right runs from the relay to the terminal block. Put your aftermarket push button inline in this wire. Every thing else stays the same as the diagram.

SIDE NOTE..............
Since the battery went dead this tractor is not charging. It could be your wireing; It could be the generator and or regulator.
Before you start re-wiring the tractor it may be a good idea for you to make up your mind if you will repair the generator regulator or replace it with a alternator.
Reason is a alternator requires a differant wiring diagram.

John in LA thanks for the reply. Questions with the after market push button starter it has two wires. Do both wires go on one solenoid post or one on each post as it is right now? Also I figued out what the Terminal Block is but there is what looks to be a second solenoid mounted under the dash. I dont see this in your diagram. Thanks
