Power Steering Seal

Thanks for the help guys! Could anyone please tell me if I can get at seal #14 by taking the steering shaft apart above the power steering lines. I'm planning to replace seal #35 and O ring 33 when I have it apart.

I'm trying to determine from the diagram where the plungers are in relation to my picture, or If I will even have that part of the steering shaft apart. My plan was to remove the shaft above the lines, but my leak is happening below the lines. It looks like most people have problems with their upper seal leaking and see fluid by the steering wheel. Mine is lower.

Thanks,

Steve

I went out to the shop to get my I&T Shop service manual and revisited my steering repair nightmare......the 28 loose balls that came out and ran all over everywhere. My manual F0-41 covers models 2310, 2600, 2610, 3600, 3610, 4100, 4110 with cab and models 4600SU and 4610SU. It cost about $30 at my local NH dealer who stocks these manuals.

As I attempted to answer your question, I read through the associated paragraphs and I am declining to assist you in attempting to answer your question as I feel that you need the manual to do this job correctly. You won't be sorry.....as I said, my ignorance cost me a complete new unit at a cost of $2000 to install on a tractor worth about $5000 when the problem developed. Parts like castings are no longer available as replacement parts....assemblies is all you can get now.

Steve,
In order to replace # 14 you will have to take it apart from #12 upwards. This means you have to remove the hydraulic block that the lines go in to.
Remove the upper column #34
Remove the nut, warpy washer and upper thrust bearing #s 19, 20, 21
Remove 4 nuts and lock washers #s 15, 16
Remove the power block #30 and adapter block #12
as a unit and lay it sideways on the bench. This will prevent all the springs, balls and plungers from falling out as you seperate the two halves.
Those springs, balls, etc are part #s 24-30 inside the power block.

Thanks Ultradog!!! That's what I was looking for. I was having trouble figuring out the parts diagram until I read your post. I saw another post where you took a picture with two pencils and that helped.

Mark, I do have both the factory shop manual (on CD) and the FO-31, which covers 4000 series 3cyl prior to 1975. I was unable to find my specific tractor in the FO-31,, and the factory shop manual is confusing to me.

What happened during your rebuild that caused you to need a new steering shaft? Hopefully I can avoid doing the same.

I had a problem getting all the balls into the correct place and one accidentally fell out as I was installing the upper housing that contains the upper seal and attaches to the lower casting with 4 stud/nuts.

Getting it back together was not as I expected and I now know why I had a problem with that joint. Had I known that I had lost a ball, that fell into the space between the two assemblies I would have surely retrieved it.

Upon getting it all back together after a few minutes of operation it failed to operate properly.

I removed everything to find that the ball had gouged out the lower casting such that it was unsealable, apparently unrepairable, and thus failed to function.

I think if you do as Ultradog mentioned, you won't be messing with the balls at all and won't have to worry about making the same mistake.
