Clutch release problems !!

I have a 1974 Ford 4000 and have had no major
problems with it. Today i went out to drag the
road and pushed in the clutch and started the tractor and cant get it to shift into any gear.
High or load speed all i get is grinding in each
position. I read in my trusty IT shop Manuel that
there is a clutch release lever inside that is controlled by the clutch release lever that
connects by a clevis to the pedal and i adjusted
that to the tightest position and no go still
grinding. It was working fine when i parked it
several weeks ago, and has had the same amount of
play in it for as long as i can remember... had it
8 years. Whats wrong with it and what do i do to
try to fix it. My assumption is that the clucth
release is not functioning do i have to split the
case to fix this.. I am a not all that mechanically inclined almost 50 year old woman

I haven't seen it on a 3 cylinder but lots of the older Fords have that happen. Clutch either rusts onto the flywheel or pressure plate and wont release. Also can be leaking oil from a bad seal in the rear of the engine or front end of the tranny.
Fix is not hard but does require a bit of courage.
START IT IN GEAR.
Drag it out of the shed or into the open so you have a clear, unobstructed path with no obstacles.
There are two wires that come down from under the dash that go to the top of the tranny. Unhook those wires from the tranny and hook them together. Now get into the seat,put the tractor in gear - I would say 4th Low
and careful now, start it. Tractor will start going immediately.
Drive it around for a while till the engine gets warmed up.
Now push the clutch in and hold it in.
Then give the brakes a good hard stomp a few times. That should release the clutch.
Easy really if you aren't afraid to try.
Once it releases you should be good to go.
Make sure you reconnect your wires to the tranny.
They are your nuetral safety switch wires so you can't normally start it in gear and hurt someone.
You might consider cutting a 2X4 block and depressing the clutch down when you park the tractor for any length of time. That will prevent the clutch from sticking again in the future.

Got a bit of courage from a friend that thought if we bashed her into a tree a few times it would brake the clutch loose. The wires you speak of on my tractor are cut off and i have no clue where the wires were rewired to but we can start it in gear if we get it good and warmed up first... yes that is a scary feeling especially when driving it around and the clutch doesn't do any slowing it down or stopping its progress. Turnes out the tree didn't do any good. Will try the stomping on the brake a few times tomorrow, and let you know the results. Thanks
 
Well if you've already "bashed her into a tree a few times" lol, then using the brakes sure isn't going to do it. This is assumimg you had the clutch pushed all the way down when you bashed her.
I would say at this point you are looking at splitting the tractor for a clutch job.
If you do split it go ahead and replace the rear main seal in the engine and the two input seals into the tranny. Just because you are allready in there.
If you do split it I would be interested in hearing what the problem was.
 
Well low and behold i decided it was worth another try this morning since i in no way want to try to split it with the lack of tools, place and experience i have so i blocked the clutch early when the sun came up and then went out a couple hours later and started it in gear stood on the clutch pedal and bashed the hell outta the brake a few times and Blam it let loose. I was so relieved i almost danced. Thank you! thank you! thank you! for all the advice, and all the threads i found on here that say this happens alot and to block the clutch from now on. Hopefully she is happy with the tranny fluid change and shell be a good girl for a lot longer
 
Well good for you for trying again. At least it's up and running again. You can also use a small chain or even a C clamp to block the clutch pedal down - what ever works handy.
It does seem that if they stick once they'll do it again. Dunno why.
