3000 Brakes Question

I finally got around to the brakes on the restoration of my 72 3000. I ordered the shoes from the part numbers in my parts manual. The new brakes shoes are 1.5 inches wide and the ones that came off are 2" wide. I installed the 1.5" shoes and they did not fit. The steel liner backing on the shoe hits the backing plate and holds the shoe about 1/2" from the actuating rod. I threw away the old shoes during the teardown so I have nothing to compare to. I called the ford place and was told that the shoes are the same, except for the width. Has anyone ran into this before? I rechecked the part numbers and all that is correct.
Thanks for your help and have a blessed day.

I ran into the same problem on a 3500 (I think it is the same shoe). I had to end up drilling new holes for the retaininng pins and some additional grinding to get them to fit. I was told they were right too.
Good Luck

Are you SURE you ordered the right shoe? I ran into this as well last year on a 3000 which was either a 72 or 73... I believe there are probably 4 or 5 shoe variants on those tractors. You need to check VERY carefully that you ordered the right one. What you encounter sounds familiar to what I ran into...
The new shoe will still be narrower tho.

Thanks for the replies. I have been over this with a fine tooth comb. In my research I found that they have two variations. A 1.5" and a 2" wide shoe. They are interchangeable. My problem is that I threw away the shoes that came off the tractor and have nothing to compare the new ones to. I was told that the only difference in the 1.5" and the 2" is the width of the shoe itself and everything else is dimensionally the same. I know by measuring the drum wear pattern that it had 2" shoes on it. I just hate to order the 2" shoes and have 2 sets that don't work. I studied the parts manual and everything I have matches up. The part numbers have been superceded with others but I am confident I have the right shoes for the tractor. I just need to find someone to physically compare the two different shoes and make sure they are dimensionally the same.
Again, thanks for all your help in this matter.

Did you order F2NN2218AA? If you did and they don't fit... check that the rear axle matches the tractor? Also... does the tractor have an 'A' or 'B' prefix on the serial number? Different shoes for NH-E tractors than the 'C' prefix Highland Parks.
Your problem sounds the same as what I dealt with. The spring pin retainer holes were in the wrong place and they didn't sit right. I'd simply received the wrong shoes...

That is the part number that I ordered. What was the part number that ended up fitting yours? I got to looking at them last night and they were almost right. About 30 min. with the grinder and got all to fit nicely. It will be a while before I can actually test them. I still have alot of final assembly and paint to go. Thanks for all your help and if you can remember the part number that fits, I will probably go ahead and change them out.

That was the one that fit here I believe. I can't remember now other than... dealer simply shipped me the wrong shoes. I think he gave me the older variant at the time.
Did you get genuine shoes or aftermarket?
