I had the dreaded rear main oil leak on both my 640 and 650 Fords, took the motors out and when it was all said and done has them both totally rebuilt. Now I'm reinstalling the engines and am ready to bolt on the hydraulic pumps. My question: Is there a gasket around the gear drive opening? I can't remember but I can't see any evidence of previous gaskets anywhere so I'm guessing no. I know theres O rings between the pressure pipe fittingd tho. Thanks

Wow,thanks guys will do,probly I'll just bolt 'er on with the afformentioned gasket but no shims since I don't know diddly. What I will do is maybe put my hand on it after it's running and feel or listen for loud gear noise/vibration?
Yeah, this all started with major rear seal leakage.Caused by worn rear crank bearing so here we went.Engine kit $750,machine shop bill $1200(decked,crank done, liners pressed, valves, etc, etc.) and mechanic $850. I'm happy. This was times two 'cause of two engines. So about $5600 later I have a couple of as new.

Yes.

The thin paper gasket serves as a gasket and shim to set drive gear backlash. Install as many gasket/shims as is necessary to adjust the backlash.

If after installing the pump and torquing the bolts, you feel no backlash when attempting to rock the pump back and forth with a screwdriver in the tach drive, install more shims.
