5000 engine knock - update

I believe I've got a spun bearing in there somewhere. Too much variation in oil pressure and some screeching going on today. I drained the engine oil and caught a sample for Archer's lab. We'll see what they have to say, but bet they find lots of wear metals in it. They're a bit handicapped because I bought this thing used and don't even know what oil was in it or for how long or if it had make-up oil added. I haven't run it hardly at all since I've had it.

If it's screaching... I think I'd just tear it down. Save the oil sample dollars for a new crank or a crank turning...

I'd probably drop the pan and pressurize the cooling system and check for leaks on the cylinder walls and in around the cam gallery as well.

cut apart the oil filter, are there flakes of bearing material? Hacksaw and 5 minutes in a vise, keep turning as you go around, not through.

Thanks guys! Oil sample only costs me collecting it and payin' the postage since I'm an Archer customer/distributor. Archer provides the sample bottle, label and shipping container even. That'll tell me more than cuttin' the filter apart. Coolant pressure test is a good check, but oil sample will also tell me if there's antifreeze present. If it's present, then should pressure check to see where it's coming from.

Thanks again! Merry Christmas to all!

I would just drop the pan and take a gander under the caps. If one is screaming in agony, it's probably gonna look different.

Oil pressure variation could be from a cracked oil pick up line. Seen that.

talked to my oil analyst today. At least no water, antifreeze or coolant in the sample. Lots of iron and aluminim.

Was preparing to get her in and start tear down, but my loader tractor, that dang Ford Genesis w/14 month old batteries, wouldn't crank. Checked electrolyte which was fine, got them on the charger tonight and will load test 'em before I put 'em back in. Maybe tomorrow it'll move and then move the 5000 into teardown place.
