5000 engine knock

My 5000 diesel started knocking suddenly. Is there a common failure to this engine that would make it knock? I believe it's a 256, but not absolutely certain. Thanks!

Inspect oil filter for bearing material.
Check #1 rod bearing.

What I did and what I found. Spun bearing.

Ours was a 256.

Did it lose pressure? Might just be a fuel knock too... Had that happen with a 201. You'd swear the rods were going to come out of it but a new injector fixed it...
If it's lost pressure then I'd bet on a rod or main. Also had that same 201 spin a main and drop a cap. Those were bad noises...
It was one of those things where... with the fuel knock you wondered what it was. With the main, there was no doubt... so since you wonder... mabey it is fuel...

Ditto what Rod said. One way to help distinguish between a fuel and rod knock is to crank it over with the fuel off. If you can hear the knock then, well, that's not good Larry.

It could be the balancer going bad, the balancer runs off the crank and is in atleast the 256 engine, not sure about the 233.

Thanks, guys. Maybe I'll get to work on it tomorrow. When did they change from the 233 to the 256? Mine was built on August 11, 1969 IIRC. It's been awhile since I looked that all up.

AFAIK, the 233/256 change was around april of '68.
Mid-'68 anyway. I'd have to double-check, but just
about positive the 233 has the balancer, too.
