100 series tractor not charging

I apologize as I am not a Ford man, but I working on quite a collection of Farmalls.
A local farmer asked me to look at his 500(?) Ford that is not charging. I would guess the model somewhat irrelevant, but I can get more info if needed. It looks like an N tractor, but it has that big fancy circle up high on the hood. If I remember correctly, it said some 100 number.
Anyhow. The tractor is still on 6 volt with a generator and VR. Both were replaced within the year by the dealer. The first gen the dealer put on started on fire on the way home. This certainly hurts my confidence in the second rebuild.
When testing all three posts on the Gen I got 6v. Same at the battery and VR. This tells me the Gen is not putting out. So I spark the VR. No click like my Farmall, but it still sparked. Restart and same results. Now I am at a loss.
I know some Farmalls had something that needed to excite the gen to get it going everytime. IIRC this was tied into the oil pressure system.
Any help on what I missed or what to look for next would be great.

What kind of shape is the wiring harness in- all nice and straight or broken & cracked insulation, lots of splices and a general rat's nest? If the latter is true I'd start by completely rewiring the tractor.

It has plastic coated wires so I would assume it has been rewired "recently" (+or- 20 years) They all seem to be in good condition with good connections.

The most peculiar thing was a little block of connections above the starter solenoid. It looked like the lights tied in there as well as a few other things. Not sure what all was going on there, but it didn't look rigged up. This is what go me thinking about the genny needing to be excited to charge.
The other thing that made me think about exciting the gen was not getting anything more than 6 volts off any one terminal.
