Hi guys, just picked up a mid 70's 2000 gas Holly carb 6 speed, it was run about a year ago, it has spark and gas to the carberator but it won't fire up. Any suggestions? Chuck

Gas to the carb, how about to the cylinders? What's the compression? Could a valve or two be stuck open? Do a dry and a wet compression test. Is there a good spark at the plugs? Are the plugs fouled? Has someone played with the timing?

Does it run if gasoline or starting fluid is sprayed into the carburetor throat?

like dean said shoot a LITTLE starting fluid to it while cranking, and see if it starts, my friend has a early '70's 2000, with the holley and 8 speed, [ 2 stick] even after having the tractor professionaly restored, it takes a shot of starting fluid to start it the first time, after that it will start normaly his engine was so worn it had to be bored 40 thousanths over to clean up the cylinder walls, it runs fine now, but it just cant suck the gas up to the cylinders when its overnight or several days cold

Eric:

Check to see that the choke valve closes fully when the knob is pulled out.

It is not uncommon for the cable clamp to slip at the carburetor resulting in a choke valve that does not close fully.

When this happens, the engine will be VERY VERY hard to start if not up to temperature.

If your friend has made a habit of spraying ether into his engine, sooner or later he will put it to sleep for good.

while I try not to use it.. ether on a gasser is a whole different story than ether on a diesel..
