4600 front axle

What is the easier/better way to repair the pivot on this axle?
I know the front side is available CNH & aftermarket, what about the worn out pin/hole on the other side?
Actually the whole axle is worn and very sloppy.
I would like as much input as possible so I can decide what to do.
Thanks
Brian

Ours was worn through the bushing and into the casting. We had to pull the front bolster off the engine and sent the whole thing to a machine shop to build it up and make a new bushing.

When we were done we made sure to drill and tap the bottom of each pivot for a grease fitting. On ours drilling the bushing was very hard. You might ask the machine shop to do it if you send it out. It was a poor design from the begining that those never had a zerk fitting on the pivots. If it moves, grease it is our motto.

Good luck. Those were a great tractor.

(We own a 4610 and (2) 4630"s.)

Send the bolster and the front mount to the machine shop. Have them bush the rear pivot, then mabey aling bore it, depending on just how bad it is. Make sure you send BOTH the bolster and the front pivot.
I can't really say that there's much point in adding a grease nipple tho. I've done that... and really, unless you have a way to keep the grease on the pin (with some type of seal), then your time and money is probably better spent in changing the bushing again in 25 years when it gets worn out. Just change it this time BEFORE it wears into the bolster...

The front pivot on this 4000 was also worn very badly from many years of a too heavy loader on it. Not only were the holes in the bolster and front bushing worn but the pins on the axle center were well worn too. The pins are hardened steel and would require a grinder to make them round again. Not an easy job even in a fully equipped machine shop as you'd have to have the grinder rotate around the pin or else be able to swing the whole axle center in a lathe to grind the pin.
What we did was to make a bushing to fit into the bolster for the rear pin. The front bushing is removeable with 4 bolts. When I removed that I found it was cracked. So Ken and I just made a new (albeit ugly) bushing for it. The pivot pins are not round due to wear but we managed to get about 1/8" of slop out of the rear pin and about 1/4" of slop out of the front pin. It tightened up the axle significantly and while not as good as new it should last for years and is good enough for an old brute of a tractor.

That would look better with a bit of paint.
Is the pin replaceable; or, is it welded to the axle?

It's welded to the axle....
I'd not expect the pin to be too bad. The pin is HARD. The bushing is sacrificial... and if you don't catch it in time, then it gets the bolster.
At least I've yet to ~see~ a bad pin.
