Why would an amp meter jump wildly. The battery stays charged. A year old regulator. I took the cover off the regulator and can see the points sparking and going in and out. When idleing it will charge and not jump around. I checked all connections, they are tight. I'm thinking the Generator brushes. On an 850.

As well as ALl the connections and wiring between the generator, VR, ammeter, and battery.

Hello, My old Ferguson was doing that, and i cleaned the points on the regulator, worked fine after that , nice and steady. Drag heavy paper like a index card through the points till the black stops getting on the paper,Then it will get a good connection. Hope this helps-ed
