601 solenoid wiring

Tractor was preveiously converted to 12v alternator and 12v starter but the 6v starter relay was never changed -- finally burned out. I ordered a new 12v solenoid and wired it the same way the 6v was wired but when I turn the switch on the engine cranks. Tried different combinations of connections at the solenoid that stopped the cranking with switch on but starter button does nothing. Can anyone provide a wiring diagram or tell me how it's supposed to be?

Thanks,
bk

Well you either have the wrong type solenoid or you have the battery/starter posts hooked up back wards. Most likely you have the wrong type solenoid and it is the type that uses battery voltage instead of grounding to turn it on

I double checked the post connections and ignition/starter connections -- all correct. I even grounded the starter terminal on the solenoid to see if maybe the starter switch had gone bad too. Still no luck so it must be the wrong solenoid. I ordered it from YT so I'll call them tomorrow.

On the correct relay the 2 small post are connected internally. Keyed power is hooked to one of the small post. The other small post is hooked to the starter button. This push button supplies the ground for the power.

It sounds like you have a relay that fits the 1965 and newer Ford tractors and many Ford cars. In this relay the S post is internally hooked to the relay mounting bolts so it always has a ground. If you supply power to this S post the motor will crank. This relay needs a dash mounted starter button or a key switch with a start position.

Here is a complete wiring diagram for the 12 volt conversion.

don't have to guess.. check with a continuity checker.

2 small posts should have continuity to each other.. but not to case. 2 big posts should have continuity when relay engaged, but not when static.

Thanks a bunch John. The wiring diagram and information helped a lot. I did have the wrong relay but ended up using it along with a new three stage ignition/starter switch. Works great. thanks again for everyone's help.
